National DOg Day
After a lifetime of living with, learning from, and being transformed by dogs, I’ve come to believe that one of the greatest gifts a dog can give us is a mirror—not one that tells us what we want to see, but one that shows us what’s actually there. National Dog Day 2026.
Velvet on National Dog Day, 2026
National DOg Day
Today is National Dog Day.
And somehow, every year, I almost forget it.
Which is rather ridiculous for someone called The Dog Goddess.
But maybe that is part of the lesson.
Dogs don't spend their lives trying to remember what day they're supposed to celebrate themselves.
They are simply here.
They notice.
They respond.
They adapt.
They communicate constantly—whether we understand the language or not.
They know when something has changed.
And perhaps most importantly, they don't waste much energy pretending to be something they're not.
After all these years of living with, learning from, communicating with, and being transformed by dogs, I have come to believe that one of the greatest gifts a dog can give us is a mirror.
Not a mirror that tells us what we want to see.
A mirror that shows us what is actually there.
Our patterns.
Our attachments.
Our fear.
Our capacity for trust.
Our boundaries.
Our ability to be present.
Our willingness to change.
And sometimes, when we are willing to listen, a dog can show us that we have already become someone very different from who we once were.
So today, on National Dog Day, I am celebrating the dogs—not simply as companions, pets, or even beloved family members.
But as teachers.
As mirrors.
As relationship experts.
As beings who continually remind us that there is another more gentler way to move through the world.
And, of course, I am celebrating my own extraordinary teacher, Velvet. ❤️
Happy National Dog Day.
